Band of the Day - Week 13

This week reminded me that I don’t think I understand genres. By which I really mean I don’t think I understand sub-genres. Which reminds me of how much I miss the OCNY scene’s ability to host the best mixed bill shows. This week features two family bands, so I guess that’s the theme? Go find something new to listen to on repeat like I am.

Don’t forget to show these bands some love…follow the socials, buy the music/merch, etc.

Here’s the recap of new (to us) bands we listened to last week (3/28 – 4/03).

xoxo Jaclyn

Week 13

03/28: Maid of Ace
I listened to the 2020 release, Live Fast or Die. It’s a ripper from beginning to end! You wish your siblings were this cool. Punk rock. Favorite Track: Let’s Go

03/29: Sonoa
I listened to the 2021 release, Forward Motion. I really enjoyed this collection of songs. This would be categorized with The Weakerthans. Favorite Track: White Knuckles (or I Am Fine, or Common Sense…or any of them)

03/30: Two Thumbs Down
I checked out the 2021 release, End All Be All. This one is my “sounds like a super fun basement show” pick of the week. (is that a genre?) Favorite Track: No Future (when the guitar lead and the vocals line up, right?)

03/31: Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers
I listened to all of it. I picked the new single as the favorite because I’m excited to see what’s next! Grunge? Punk? Riot? Favorite Track: Girl Sports

04/01: Two Headed Girl
New music Friday. I randomly stumbled upon this band. They happened to put out their debut LP yesterday, Media Naranja. I couldn’t put this record into a genre box if I tried and I think that’s what I liked about it. Favorite Track: Our Fingers and The Dirt (or Wanna Make a Bet)

04/02: Fluorescents
I checked out the 2021 EP, Ultraviolet. A solid little pop punk(?) EP. I’m excited to hear what’s next. (and will also be going back to check out what came before). Favorite Track: Locked Away

04/03: The Filthy Radicals
I checked out the 2021 EP, The Fine Line Between Real and Insane. Starts with a rip roaring opener. It reminds of a sound I haven’t heard in a while. It’s gritty, political, punk ska. Delightful. Favorite Track: Nothing To Write Home About
